Atout lire

Atout lire is a nonfiction guided reading series that provides opportunities to teach and practise specific reading strategies and skills based on the needs and abilities of students. The books are written to meet the instructional needs of students at three levels in each grade: approaching, at, and beyond. Criteria for determining reading levels include:

• Reading strategies presented in the book
• Complexity of language - vocabulary, structure
• Conceptual level of the content

Topics and themes provide connections to Canadian curriculum. The strong visual appeal and guided-reading prompts direct students’ learning and critical-thinking skills.

The Atout lire series is intended to teach students about the different ways in which factual information can be conveyed through print and visuals using the context of science and social studies topics typically taught at these grade levels.

Seventy-two books, each thirty-two pages long, offer engaging topics and interesting information in the areas of science and social studies. The books are an example of one of five nonfiction text forms that students are encouraged to model in writing activities at the end of their reading. The five nonfiction text forms are represented by at least three titles within each grade:

• Explanation
• Recount
• Report
• Procedural text
• Persuasive text

Each book focuses on a specific set of reading strategies, providing guided questioning and prompts for the reader on each page. Each book also provides teachers and students with links to writing through a special feature called Reading Leads to Writing. A four-page Teaching Note, which includes a reproducible master, is available for each book in the series. A thirty-two page Program Guide provides information about guided-reading teaching strategies and an overview of the reading strategy and topic framework.
